MEDINA'S STOCKMAN SIMPLY ONE OF A KIND
Bees Guard is just a Throwback, a real joy to watch
Author: Terry Pluto
Akron Beacon Journal (OH)
March 16, 2000
HOW OFTEN DO YOU SEE GREATNESS?
You hate to start any story about a high school kid like that.
But if you had been at Toledo's Savage Hall last night… If you had seen Medina's Tony Stockman's outrageous 41-point performance in the biggest game of his career… If you had witnessed the helpless shakes of the head and heard the endless compliments from the Mansfield players who tried to defend him… If you remember basketball from the 1970's, when players such as Pete Maravich seemed to control the basketball as if it were on strings, and then shot it from anywhere on the court as if he had absolutely no conscience… If you remember when watching a player made you smile, because he played the game with such joy, such confidence and such a penchant for the spectacular… Then, Tony Stockman is for you.
You can see why he inspires Clemson coach Larry Shyatt to compare him with Sacramento Kinds star Jason Williams. You can say that Shyatt still is operating on recruiting overdrive, having signed Stockman to help to revive his 10-20 program. But if you saw him swish jumper after jumper from 3-point range, often swaying to the side or nearly falling flat on his back… Then you couldn't help but agree with Medina or Mansfield coach Gregg Collins, who said, "I haven't seen a player like him anywhere else this year."
Or Mansfield Guard Rudy Wolf, who said, "There is no one close to him."
You can say that Stockman's Medina team lost 75-69 in overtime to Mansfield Senior last night in a Division 1 regional semifinal, ending the Bees' season.
But you needed to see Mansfield sending two and three defenders against Stockman every time he touched the ball. And you have to realize that Mansfield is 24-1, ranked fourth in the state and boasts a couple of major-college athletes.
And, to be kind, Stockman is surrounded by a lot of hard-working teammates squeezing every once of ability they have, but they just don't have anything approaching Stockman's God-given talent.
He is slender – 6-foot-2 and only 165 pounds. But he has long arms, the kind you find on a guy who is 6-5. He has long fingers, much as Utah's John Stockton, that make it easier for him to handle the ball.
He doesn't just dribble it, he dominates the ball. He can go between his legs, around his back – maybe even between his ears. It's hard to know, because every move is so sure, so quick.
Blink, and you miss a highlight.
"That's why I believe he'll be a crowd favorite," said Clemson's Shyatt. "He has so much flare for the game. He doesn't believe it, but I told Tony that he reminds me of when I saw Jason Williams in high school – and I mean it."
Shyatt spotted Stockman this summer at a 5-Star camp, and the Cleveland Heights native immediately fell in love, like Charlie Brown after his first glance of returning next year. One is Will Solomon, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring as a sophomore. "I never promise anyone a starting job," Shyatt said. "But I'm very serious when I saw Tony can compete for one, and I say I expect him to play significant minutes as a freshman."
The game comes very easily to Stockman, with his incredible quickness and hands that are faster than a snake's tongue. He was credited with six steals last night, and he probably put at least one finger on 10 different passes and/or dribbles by the opposition. The Mansfield players talked about Stockman's hesitation dribble, how he seems to slow down, then stop, then zip right past you.
This kid is in great shape and obviously burns with competitive fire, but he hides it by playing the game with a Walt Frazier poker face.
At times, he appears almost disinterested in what is happening, but then he darts into a passing lane, makes a steal and dashes down to the other end of the court for a layup. That's why Shyatt says, "He's one of those kids whom you recruit and you say he has a chance to be a great player in the ACC."
And that's saying a lot, because how many high school kids from Ohio even play Sure, there are holes in Stockman's game.
His shot selection can be frightening, because he tends to heave the ball from 25 feet, even when he's off-balance. He's a great defender in a zone when he can roam like a free safety, but he'll need to add some weight and physical strength to play the grueling man-to-man defense favored by ACC schools.
"But those are all things he can work on," said Shyatt.
And, at this point in his life, Stockman has been willing to listen, to make changes – not only with the basketball, but also with his attitude.
A year ago, Stockman had a tug-of-war with Peters. It was Peters' first year at Medina, and he knew that, despite Stockman's overwhelming talent, the guard had a learn to respect and enhance his teammates if Medina were going to make a run at the state title. Last season, Peters suspended Stockman for four games, and they seemed to spend the rest of their time in a test of wills.
"But this summer, Coach and I decided to get along," said Stockman. "I promised to listen to him, and he listened to me."
There still were some rocky moments, as when Peters tried to convince Stockman to pass the ball more, to stick with the offense.
"But it's been like night and day from a year ago," Peters said. "Tony has really grown as a person and as a student. I'm more proud of that than what he's done on the court."
Stockman has the standardized test score he needs to play as a freshman at Clemson, and Peters said that one more semester or class work like the one he just completed and his academics will be all set.
Medina ends the season with a 20-4 record, and this is the deepest the Bees advanced in the playoffs since 1983. Stockman averaged 26 points and owns tons of school scoring records. But if you were in Toledo last night, you know this won't be the last any of us have seen of this young man.
